Aoraki/Mount Cook in the Southern Alps/Kā Tiritiri o te Moana, west-central South Island, New Zealand.
Sighted in 1642 by the Dutch navigator Abel Tasman, it was known as Aoraki (also spelled Aorangi; from the Māori for “cloud piercer”) before being renamed in Mount Cook (1851) by Captain John Lort Stokes to honour Captain James Cook who surveyed and circumnavigated the islands of New Zealand in 1770.
