The Stewart Island Robin (Petroica australis rakiura) belongs to the New Zealand Robin (Toutouwai) species, together with the North Island Robin (Petroica longipes) and the South Island Robin (Petroica australis australis). They are all New Zealand robins or Toutouwai although, strictly speaking, the North Island robin is a completely different species from the other two subspecies. New Zealand robins are also closely tied genetically with the black robin (Petroica traversi) in the Chatham Islands and also the tomtit.
They are friendly and trusting, often coming to within a couple of metres of people. They can be found in forests with dense, even, canopies and ground covered with leaf litter.
To attract a female, bachelors will sing a song lasting up to 30 minutes!
I met this little guy on Ulva Island, which is one of the few predator-free birds sanctuaries in New Zealand.
