Description
The ancient archaeological site Mea'e Te l'Ipona, close to the village of Puamau, is home of the largest "tikis" (ancient, human-like religious stone sculptures) in French Polynesia. The largest is well over 2.50 meters (7.5 feet) high and one of them even has six fingers!
The exact meaning of these sculptures is unclear, though archaeologists believe they likely represent deified ancestors.
Surrounded by beautifully lush grounds, the site is overwhelming and has a lot of what Polynesians call “mana” (spiritual power).
Only a small part of the site has been restored and most of it is still buried under massive trees and rocks.
