Description
Sheep are often seen high up on these slopes. (elev. 6,300 feet). The color in the rock comes from the gypsum( a form of calcium sulfate) and small amounts of iron oxide. 'Current theories indicate Dall Sheep use licks each Spring to replenish depleted supplies of calcium and magnesium. In this area, the Dall sheep may be getting calcium by eating gypsum.
In the 1930's trapper Ed Ueeck, known as the man from Sheep Mountain, was concerned that the construction of the Glenn Hwy would lead to over hunting the area sheep. His efforts led to the designation of the Sheep Mountain Closed Area, where sheep hunting is illegal.
