Description
Ua Huka, one of the Marquesas islands (French Polynesia), is home to more wild horses than humans, with a human population of less than 600 and a wild horse population of more than 3,000. Horses were introduced to the island in the mid-19th century, a gift from French admiral Abel Dupetit-Thouars, who brought them from Chile. Islanders tamed and adopted them over the years, and they became the perfect transport for traversing roadless valleys, steep slopes, and high ridges.
